The Last Burma Star

To mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, explorer Levison Wood and historian Alex Bescoby set out on an urgent mission to honour the last surviving veterans of the Burma Campaign – the brutal, often forgotten chapter of the Second World War fought in the jungles of Asia. Levison’s own grandfather fought in Burma (now Myanmar), while Alex spent almost a decade living and working in Myanmar. Together they retrace the battlefields that shaped the fate of the war, uncovering the huge but overlooked contribution of Commonwealth soldiers. Their journey takes an extraordinary turn when they discover a 100-year-old veteran, still living in Myanmar and caught up in today’s civil war, who never received his Burma Star medal. Against the odds, they set out to deliver it to him – along with a remarkable message from King Charles III – before it’s too late.
